CSX coal action on the CC sub. Same train, two location of Sinks, and Berea KY.

Once my regular railfanning grounds, I hadn’t caught a train in Sinks or Berea for a decade or better. Other life’s work had me in the area though and I used the time to see what all has changed over the years. A substantial amount it turns out, more than should be described in this short clip. I did manage to catch this coal bucket northbound at Sinks by chance, and decided to try to get ahead...

Dang, that third clip has four locomotives two high hoods and two dash 8’s
Bro doesn’t know it, but that second locomotive leading in the second clip is for your that is a dash 8 wide cab
CSX really let this beautiful line go to hell, They should sell the EK off to RJ corman or the Kentucky Steam place in Ravenna
You do realize that, except lumber which virtually disappeared by 1950-60, coal which had become more than 90% of this lines traffic, has dried up and the only remaining active load out near Hazard ships out east to the ex C&O Big Sandy line. You now have about 100 miles of expensive to maintain mountain railroad with NO traffic (and virtually no prospects for any) save for a bit of car storage in Ravenna.
I watched this so much as a kid, I'm 16 now last time I've seen this was well over 10 years ago
End of an era. Thank you for sharing this. I lived in KY back in the 80s and recall CSX’s attempt at this. I couldn’t believe it when I looked up and saw a streamlined F locomotive headed our way.
I love the old Lesile horns!
From jackson thru beattyville, this was an amazing find. Ive walked miles of those tracks as a kid. And those streets in beattyville are gone, its all redone now. I would love to see from beattyville on to Irvine ky... absolutely an amazing video !
This unit now got a K5la!
Thank you for doing this Joe!
Chessie power with grey ghost is Kenova, West Virginia passing under the N&W. :-)
Just subscribed ! Great vid. What a loss to the community . What does it look like in 2023 ?
Well done vid , Joe . Man , this is ANOTHER run I thought would never end . So glad I got this while it was in full glory. Is there ANY hope of restoration of this line ?
Joe , I feel your pain . This section of the L&N used to be my most favorite part of the country . I live in Cleveland , TN. and had made the drive up MANY , MANY times . After viewing and article in a mid 1980's CTC Board magazine , Steve Glischinski and I made it our mission to cover this line ; Coal , TOFC, Manifest , Auto Rack and of course the Roadrailer trains were ALL fair game. It was a shooting gallery up here and we just cleaned up over the years. The helper station at Chaska was a great starting point and the crews were happy to supply line ups and stories. Got several rides up the hill over Duff Mountain. These days it is just sad , sad , sad ..... I had so much fun up here in the 1980's and thought it would never end. Would love to compare notes with you sometime. Great vid by the way . Northbound coal , odd , no ?
I find this vid very interesting , I well remember this service . I photographed many of these runs in Kentucky , Tennessee and Georgia . My favorite motive power was of course the four F Unit locomotives numbered 116 , 117 , 118 and 119. I have seen between 9 and 91 trailers pulled by these iconic engines. One day , I was chasing the northbound train ; R 210 thru southern Tennessee and was set up at a curved bridge over Cove Creek , just south of Jacksboro , TN. After getting this fine broadside shot , I hiked back to my car , drove out to the highway that followed the CSX right of way . When I got to this road I was totally surprised to see the train right in my line of sight ; BACKING UP . To this day , I never figured out what was occurring before my eyes. I was easily able to get a good lead on the train and set up for several great shots in the Kentucky portion of the run. That was a fine chase for me , one of many in this era. I still am amazed the management allowed these vintage power sets on the main line with the hottest train over the road . You will note that at no time during this video were the cab units shown powering the train. Amazing ..... Look forward to any other comments from those fans that were able to view this long gone operation.
God this brings back memories! Thank you for this incredible catch Joe
Awesome to see this legacy video on the *CSX* _Xpress Railer_ branded RoadRailer equipment. Thanks for posting 👍🏿
I work for UPS, occasionally we see these units in our yard as lease units, they are pretty beat up from use, but the advantages of not having to use a rail yard crane to remove them from the rail seams like a good idea, but now that most manufactured goods come from over seas it doesn't really make sense for the current manufacturing sector transportation here in the US. They might be a good choice now that fuel costs have really run a lot of truckers out of business, and might be better use for refrigerated transport of produce, and other rail transportation locations.
The signal bridge is gone replaced by two daul head signals
Yup. We procured it via donation from NS when it was replaced and it is now erected over the tracks at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum.
@@joenugent986 cool, I went to the museum last year with my son, his grandfather and uncle
Can't wait for it to Be under it's own steam After it's overhaul!
Joe, the music alone was worth the visit. But, the powerful overhead images spoke volumes of excitement. I'll check out some of your other videos for sure.
Failed technology.junked
A failed, or less optimal version of a technology. Other similar arrangements managed extended careers in fairness to the general design.
roadrailers are still used today. it's just a different design. (because this unit ended adding what could be considered unessary weight while on the road)
HI I'm putting together a video on the C420, would it be ok if I used some of this footage?
That’s fine, use away. Thanks for the professionalism of asking.
Oh man! I can't get enough of #152!
Tadpole, lol. try Typo.
The 152 is undergoing restoration at the Kentucky Railway Museum.
We need more videos like this
Thanks.
Man, the Air Comp resembles SRC 90's So Much
I have some of the original 1850 and 1860s Railroad Spike off the old Louisville and Nashville railroad
What a treat ;D don't you just miss this era of railroading?
nice video, like seeing all the old power
when was this filmed?
Without looking up the original file for an exact date…. 2007-2008.
Looks much different than the Wabash National RoadRailer
Mr poopy hahaha
Nice
They do this for every sub?
Geometry car trip played backwards. 🙂
Is there a video on how to load this?
Our department has kept the “how to load” video private, but it’s simple. As we load with our 250’ rear pre-connects, it’s simply 150’ of straight stack hose to the right side. A dump loop is placed after the first course is laid to clear the bed, another loop at 75’. Set the male coupling aside, then load nozzle and last 100’ to the left in a standard minuteman stack. Connect the couplings and you have this load.
We'll never see or hear this again. Thanks for filming and sharing.
Love it man! I've always wondered what the place looked like before the big crash and the yard closed. Cash amburgey was the last road foreman there in Ravenna before the yard shut down. I gotta say alot of your stuff is a window into the past! I saw some Chessie and Family Lines in the video there
Why the hammer rung bell?
IF 722 were to be restored, this would be its future whistle
Sounds like this is a different whistle!
I never worked have guess that a UP unit would lead a Z544, that's crazy, was corman looking to buy new units?
Yes, they were conducting fuel consumption testing at the time to see if the savings would justify newer power. This was around the time they started cutting down a lot of the bulkheads on the flats to reduce the profile closer to the ingot size and reduce the drag the cars produced.
@@joenugent986 Shoot not even the guys working at the Richmond depot ever heard about this, that's insane! Did Corman not like the results? They are still using the old Southern Pacific and Rio Grande tunnel motors.
@@buccaneerrailfanning1776 what I was told, was that the fuel consumption savings were positive, but before they pursued any further fuel prices stabilized, and fell, and that ended the need and also avoided “non-standard” power in the fleet. Those trains run at a contracted price point, that has a set negotiated timeframe for service also, and when fuel prices rose so dramatically and unexpectedly in that period, they were going to be very close on a profit margin because of the rising fuel cost.
Hey man I don't know if you still reply ti comments, I railfan in Richmond Kentucky, and I see your videos as kind of a time capsule of what this subdivision used to be. Can you remember any fun or cool catches you've seen? What's the best spot to railfan at?
Honestly, when I was still living in Berea and filming most of the CC stuff, “interesting” was usually just foreign power like some unpatched SP stuff, or catching some of the old U-boats working out their last years and looking ratty. Most of what I saw, is posted on my channel now. I wouldn’t dare try to guess where to Railfan the like now. A lot has changed since I was frequenting it. Traffic is way down for sure. I can say Gap, Roundstone, & Ford were my favorite spots for wide open side viewing, or long looks down the straights, and all with signals to get clues from even without a scanner in hand.
@@joenugent986 Yeah the action here is criminal, I know the guys who work at the Richmond depot and operate the local, they all tell me how great of a subdivision it was, we are down to 4 trains from Winchester to Corbin, and soon we are getting the last 2 Q trains taken from us, what was hauled through here 10ish years ago? I heard this sub used to run intermodal
Damn how dare they replace the Bryant Zinc bell at Scott Ave.
Awsome catch that is probably 23j or 28k
What are those buildings that were being constructed? Nice video!
Bourbon aging warehouses for Maker’s Mark.
@@joenugent986 Wow! Thank you very much for the information, Joe. I am contemplating a move to the area there and wanted to see what it looks like. Your video was very helpful. Thanks, again!
Hey man it would be cool if you could get a video of a RJ Forman train going threw Versailles again on the gated crossing towards downtown and the railroad crossing that goes across the bypass, I’ve been wanting to see a train on that line and by the crossings but I ain’t had the time to railfan it, thanks
Great flyover of Danville Yard! Thanks for putting this up.
That was a cool video!
